Pharmacology / Actions
Silymarin has a variety of pharmacologic actions that may contribute to its apparent effects in treating liver disease. It inhibits lipid peroxidase and beta-glucoronidase and acts as an anti-oxidant and free radical scavenger. Silymarin also inhibits the cytotoxic, inflammatory, and apoptotic effects of tumor necrosis factor (TFN). It apparently can alter outer hepatocyte cell membranes that can prevent toxin penetration. Silymarin is thought to reduce hepatic collagen formation and increase hepatic glutathione content.
Milk Thistle Forte is manufactured from Milk Thistle extract which contains flavanolignans (collectively known as silymarin), flavonoids and other compounds. This product is standardized to contain 168 mg of flavanolignans per tablet to ensure optimal strength and quality. The compounds in Milk Thistle Forte, particularly the flavanolignans, are used traditionally to:- provide antioxidant activity
- support healthy liver function and structure
- protect liver tissue by supporting normal cellular defenses
- support healthy general detoxification function
- increase bile flow for relief of mild symptoms of occasional mild digestive discomfort
- promote normal response to environmental stresses*
